Guest Performances and Workshops: throughout the year and especially the summer, the library offers the opportunity to enjoy theatre performances, puppet shows, musical programs, guest speakers, babysitting, puppetry and cartooning workshops. Funding for these programs is provided by support from the Friends of the Library and local grant money.
Teen Volunteer Program: teens ages 14 and up are offered the opportunity to volunteer at the library to assist with a variety of tasks. All teen volunteers must attend an orientation meeting at the beginning of the summer.
Reference and Reader’s Guidance: helpful staff will assist you in selecting and locating materials to meet your needs.
Public Access Computers: computers are available for use by children ages 4 and up (or younger, if accompanied by an adult).
Dial-A-Story: a service provided to patrons by the Venice Public Library, dial 486-2330 and hear a 3-4 minute story. A unique way to bring literature and children together.
Listening Center: a cassette player and headphones that will accommodate three listeners is available for use. Over 200 books/cassette kits are available to choose from including picture books, Beginning Readers, music or storytelling tapes.
Bibliographies and Reading Guides: the Youth Section maintains a notebook with lists of recommended reading for various age levels and reading interests and includes award winning titles, subject lists and Accelerated Reader lists for many local schools. Many guides to aid in book selection are available on the Reference shelves and in the Parenting Collection.
Group Visits, Library Tours and Orientation: when requested the library will prepare a program for groups that wish to visit the library, will give group or individual instruction on how to use library resources and will offer orientation to all areas of the library. If you have a group that would like to visit the library, please call to ahead 861-1212 to schedule a visit with staff.
Preschool Story-Circle: a weekly story program for children ages 3-5 is offered on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. No registration is required. A monthly schedule of Youth Section activities is available in the Youth Section.
Children’s Summer Reading Program: weekly programs are scheduled through the summer months for children ages 3-11. Programs include films, special guests, reading aloud, creative dramatics, hands-on fun, puppetry, music and crafts. Reading Logs to track summer reading are also available.
Teen Summer Reading Program: teens keep track of their reading and submit "mini" book reports. Reading incentives are donated by community organizations for those who participate.
